MidMichigan Beyond the Cutting Edge: SPY and TMR
BackCardiovascular surgeon Robert N. Jones, M.D., describes two examples of the advanced technology available at MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland, Michigan: The SPY(R) imaging system and transmyocardial revascularization, or TMR. The SPY imaging system allows surgeons to look at new bypass grafts during open heart surgery and to download real-time images of the heart to a portable media player to share with the patient's family. When patients with angina (chest pain) cannot be helped with bypass surgery or stenting, another alternative is to make pin-sized channels through a portion of the heart wall using a carbon dioxide laser. This procedure, called transmyocardial revascularization causes new blood vessels to develop, which can relieve the pain.
