The fire started at about 6:20 p.m. on Thursday, 19th of July, 1906, in the roof or inside the top floor of Bonded Warehouse No. 4, belonging to Messrs. James Watson & Co. Ltd., Whisky Merchants. The bonds and working parts of the premises were closed at 5:00 p.m., and the cause of the outbreak is unknown. The bonds and working parts of the premises were closed at 5:00 p.m., and the cause of the outbreak is unknown. The bonds were filled and the outbreak at once assumed serious proportions, the fire being spread in all directions by the burning spirit which not only freely passed the double-iron doors, but also found its way through solid walls between the Watson's Bond and premises belonging to Messrs. John Robertson & Son, Ltd. In the end both premises were reduced to ruins along with buildings in the immediate area including a provision warehouse owned by the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society, Ltd. and a store for fireclay goods owned by Mr. Stewart Robertson. Outwith the immediate area two jute warehouses were destroyed, the roofs having been ignited independently of each other by falling embers. Yeaman's Bond to the west and Trades Lane Calender to the east were only saved by the heroic exertions of the Brigades and of the Calender employees, but both were seriously damaged by fire and water. At about 3:00 p.m. on Friday, 20th of July, another warehouse in Mary Ann Lane was destroyed after being ignited by falling embers and the Trades Lane Calender was further damaged on the east side by falling walls. The loss overall was estimated at about £400,000. All the available men and appliances from the City Fire Brigade, together with the Harbour Firemen and steam fire engine, Messrs. Baxter Bros; Trades Lane Calender Co's., and the Clepington Spinning Co's. fire brigades, fought the fire - all inder the charge of Firemaster Weir, City Fire Brigade.
